Vic: Police set up flying squads to mobe in at NYE trouble spots

Victorian police say they've set up New Year's Eve special taskforces .. ready to swing
into action anywhere around the state.

They'll monitor potential New Year's Eve trouble spots including the popular party
spots at Lorne .. Mornington Peninsula .. Bass Coast and Geelong.

Police will also be able to issue banning orders on people misbehaving in Melbourne's
CBD and Chapel Street.

Assistant Commissioner GARY JAMIESON says officers won't tolerate drunken and unruly
behaviour under any circumstances.







New Year's Eve partygoers have been urged to come into the city early on the night
to secure the best spots.

Public transport will be free after six pm (AEDT) on New Year's Eve and will operate
well into the early hours of New Year's Day to take revellers home.

There'll be a special fireworks display at 9.15 pm for youngsters who might have to
be in bed by midnight .. followed by the more traditional fireworks display at midnight.
