Fed: Airline passengers being checked as SARS threat continues

Airports around the country will continue checking incoming passengers for the deadlySARS virus, after it became subject to Australia's most stringent quarantine laws.

Amendments to Australia's Quarantine Act came into force yesterday.

Under the new laws listing SARS as a quarantinable disease, people who refuse assessment,treatment or isolation face fines or jail.

Chief commonwealth medical officer RICHARD SMALLWOOD says 15 international passengersfrom Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Cairns airports were identified by airline crewsand customs officers for medical assessment yesterday.

All were cleared after checks ruled out SARS -- Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

Meanwhile, a nine-year-old boy has been admitted to hospital in NSW with symptoms ofthe virus after a visit to Hong Kong.

The New South Wales Health Department says while his symptoms indicate he may havethe virus, his condition is improving so it's unlikely he has SARS.

A two-year-old girl will remain under observation in an isolation unit at Monash Medical Centre.

And a woman suspected of having SARS is undergoing tests in a Perth hospital.
